i made a new book - it's basically just a new and improved version on the smaller zine i made in august. it's a 9"X12" book that contains ten 12"X18" HQ full color prints, a swanky translucent cover and some writings by jese gordon. thanks to réseau arts actuel i get to have my stuff featured/sold at the ny art book fair this year. the fair is held at my favorite place in the world, the MoMA Ps1 contemporary art center from Sept 29th (opening party) to October 2nd. this is going to be the best! Also, Montreal - I'll be dropping off a few editions of Prologue at drawn & quarterly.

I'm currently putting together a show that includes eleven artists from the Banff Artists In Residence (BAIR) here at the Banff Centre. The show opens on August 29th at 4:30 in the Other Gallery which is located in the Glyde Hall Building. There will be prints, paintings, photos, sculptures, wood-cuts, collage and even a performance piece. Come and have a glass of wine with us!

I wrote this little blurb about the show that I'm still uncertain about using.

A varied cast of mountain ghosts have awakened, ravenous for human form, while eleven artists have been transported to the midst of an Albertan valley. Here they have been immersed in an astonishing display of rocky giants who’ve summoned mighty spirits to guide our heroes through deeper explorations of their individual practices. A mountain’s curvaceous slopes and jagged edges will arouse magic in one girl to build you a collection of pretty cuts. A sunbeam lays atop a man in a garden of forget-me-nots where a memory is illuminated and soon dissipated in the shade of a passing cloud. A drop of water tunnels its way through a glacier while a curious woman follows. A boy builds a fire where flames reveal burning desires and truths; while another finds himself in a graveyard of dancing corpses.

Ghosts are good here in the valley.

i asked one of my favorite people, jese gordon if she would be so kind to write an introduction for my solo exhibition in Vancouver (which has been post-poned once again - August 25th - Sept 5th - last time this happens i promise) and she kind of blew my mind - which was to be expected, but it felt so good. thank you so much jese, i love you.

Prologue. An introduction by Jese Gordon.

There really is no escape from the perimeters of this small space we call home.

Like the roots of a tree seeking water by the riverbank, Jonathan Reid Sevigny’s chaotic idylls draw you in. The acrobatic trunk, after years of wet feet, leans closer &closer to the river’s surface, dips its leafy fingers as if to probe the muddy depths. Over time this alder, poplar, or crack willow, hugs the river’s edge trimming its waist slowly, innocently, ceaselessly, altering its silhouette from skyline to riverbed. If you as the happy traveler, maybe floating down the river in a brightly-coloured inner tube, peer down at the rocks, deadheads, fishies beneath, or grab at the sweaty palms of the leaves, or lay your head back to sun your face, you couldn’t help but notice the wonderfully sharp boys & girls dancing with skeletons in the graveyard on the shore, & smoking joints in the treehouse of their 8-year-old former selves, & weeping in a 13 story bed with a ladder, & snaring each other with spears, & wearing the universe as a bandit’s bandana. These boys & girls would perhaps make you wonder at the state of your vision, of your mind. This once pastoral river scene is now perverted, injected with the magic of mythical images and revisionist memories. Welcome. There really is no escape from the perimeters of this small space we call home.

Cowansville: rural community in the Eastern Townships of Quebec is where our hero spent his boyhood. At a glance Jonathan’s depictions of this place seem crisply utopian, a neat little playground of nice boys & girls. However a closer look reveals their human forms are corrupt, splayed, eaten, and absorbed by animal fraternities, by swords of ritualistic death, by minute veils of the macrocosmic sky in all its unknown intricacies. The scene becomes otherworldly in the kid’s play, pushing us to remember that what is around and inside is both innocent and dirty, violent and soft, and constantly revised.

Now how do they play? Macabre and celebratory, skeletons dance under the rubriced sky of a strong sense of loss, of personal war. In the magic treehouse first joints are smoked, first hands are jobbed, first hearts are shattered and first tears run home to the river. This conflict of influence, this war where all sides are loved briefly, simultaneously, unendingly, fights for prominence in their collective memory, creating a battle scar itself reimagined by closing the eyes and moving the coloured pencil. These myriad battles duke out their hierarchy of importance and interpretation. Their placement on the page intuitive and inclusive. Cultural myth, pop images, old loves, the smell of the childhood bed— by Jonathan’s hand a double-decker Princess and the Pea bleeding out from her first menstrual period— mix a strong drink. Remember then select headlines of the newspaper world, and you’ve got a grown-up dream sprinkled with the trippy vividness of
a childhood nightmare.

The romantic revisionings occupy a special place in Jonathan’s imagic palimpsest. The ephemeral nature of young love memorialized, as dying ritualistic deaths just to be reborn unending. Jonathan’s drawings spin the pulled grin of the clown, tear firmly etched in the corner of his eye before you. And you will gaze at him remembering those memories you’ve never experienced, and be dipped into the wars in the holes of your mind. Like the picture-postcards of foreign Cowansville to the tourist, you sample these dreams feeling their chaotic necessity. While the surrealist hodgepodge swallows whole any attempt at rhyme or reason, effaces solid interpretations of identity. In the re-dream of youth, of passionate firsts of exhilarating highs and devastating lows, the coming-of-age is scarred by specific events and, over time, reopened and scarred over by the imprint of the spaces in which these events occurred. When you wish you could fight back, kiss back, it is theatrical revisioning of the scenic spaces of the original struggles and magic of a young heart. For there really is no escape from this home, when the borders breathe and the players are tricksters. But you’re not there anyway; you’re seeing the rainbow as a pin-prick in your watery eye.

Several of these artists utilize traditional and, some might say, romantic media, creating a tension between “soft” studio practice and the quick, contemporary communications that happen in a global society dominated by social networking Web sites, blogs and interactivity. Iviva Olenick’s dainty handmade narrative embroideries act as an old-world “blog,” chronicling her own desire to find a mate in New York City’s dating scene as well as the experiences of Brooklynites seeking and often finding love. Annika Connor’s lush watercolors of socialites recall a New York defined by Sex in the City, whose young fashionistas are searching for love and excitement. Her Kissing Couples series illuminates the subjects’ ever-present desire for intimacy and romance. George Towne’s poignant portraits of gay men function as photographs in their immediacy and as classical paintings in their preciousness. New York City becomes the protagonist in many of these

works, even as we are invited to peer into the intimate experiences of the artists and their subjects.

The artists seemingly triumph over suffering and angst through the poetry of form, suggesting the immediacy of mid-century American Abstract Expressionism as well as the narrative structure of myth. Sarah Dineen’s tortured abstractions evoke human viscera removed from the body. Her paintings become places where the memory of fury, lust, intimacy and deeply rooted urgency to connect to another human being merge into a powerful force, and places where creative energy and sexual energy become one.

Bill Nelson’s mythic figure studies seek to illuminate the sexual transgressions found in the Biblical texts his Catholic upbringing exposed him to, albeit subliminally. Apryl McAnerney’s humanoid beasts explore lifecycles and dreamscapes. Jonathan Reid Sevigny’s detailed illustrations of prepubescent debauchery explore a world imagined by outsider artists such as Henry Darger, rife with historical and artistic allusion.

The photographers in this exhibition invite us into a seemingly pedestrian world where lives connect and just as quickly splay out in opposite directions. Ilona Szwarc documents the apparent instabilities, anxiety, innocence, sacredness, as well as vanity and narcissism, of women in their private or fantasy lives. Barnett Cohen’s exploration of the life of an aging, eccentric southerner leads him to the clapboard home of Oliver Hurt, who talks about his thoughts on his own death–which he eagerly awaits–and his still-vivid memories of his former lovers. The photographs illuminate the stark solitude and raw vulnerability of his existence. Tomer Exterman’s portraits of senior citizens on Brooklyn's Brighton Beach are a bold and endearing representation of the convergence of culture and individualism. Emiliano Granado’s Time for Print series gives viewers a glimpse of the interaction between photographer and aspiring model, with the subject awaiting his or her moment of fame and the photographer capturing a moment of quiet and self-awareness.

Several of the artists explore personal identity, such as Annette Isham, whose video Friends First! deals with the construction of identity, role playing, and the relationships among self, others and the space between. Marcos Chin’s Machoman subverts several familiar male archetypes in his soft sculpture, a wearable chest plate which alludes to armor and creates a dialogue between forms traditionally thought of as masculine and effeminate.

Finally, the seemingly simple matter of human connection is investigated in Grayson Cox’s Point of Purchase, an interactive sculpture that works somewhat like an altar or water-cooler by providing people with a place to charge their cell phones, drawing them together and encouraging connection to one another. Jeremy Olson’s work considers the built environment in relation to desire and fantasy, including the architectural spaces we traverse as well as the construction of media. Carolina Moscoso’s Accusation deals with accusation by others–or by a man towards himself–and with the associated inner struggle, emotional void and perceived punishment for what is right or wrong. Nate Burbeck’s solitary figures in eerily supernatural landscapes point to an experience of wonder in which the sublime overtakes the individual.

The Westside Gallery, located at 133/141 West 21st Street between 6th and 7th Avenues, is open Monday through Friday, 9am to 7pm, and Saturday, 10am to 6pm; closed on Sundays and public holidays. The gallery will be closed from Friday, July 1, 1pm, through Monday, July 4, for Independence Day.

So i spent like 5 hours rediscovering every corner of my hometown on google maps a couple weeks ago. somehow it was a really fucking emotionally overwhelming experience. I figured it would seem appropriate to start exploring that entire part of my existence.. if i start drawing about all that stuff perhaps i'll develop a good foundation for the rest of my work. right?

i've been thinking for some time now about exploring the strange relationship that we share with the structures that hold our past; I want to challenge memory, and contextualize it, amplifying my greatest fears and pleasures, while striving to preserve a muted energy as there is seemingly no escape from the perimeters of this small place we call home.

I've been working hard on drawings, I promise. a lot of them are much larger in scale than the usual drawing so it's become a little more time consuming. also this blog has been dead this month due to getting a monster flew topped off with a nasty case of strep-throat - it's been terrible, i haven't been able to lift a god damn pencil for 10 consecutive days. I never get sick, it was really hard and i was so pathetic, feel bad for me.

i had the pleasure of meeting mister richard haines earlier this summer and found a buddy to draw with in the park on pretty days. not only is richard sweet and talented, but his beautiful and fashionable illustrations can be seen internationally. he also teaches fine arts at Parsons and the Fashion Institute of Technology - i'm going to do my best to sneak in and audit a class while i'm still in nyc. i chose some (of many) favorite sketches to share below.

i follow illustrator Jillian Tamaki's blog religiously and I loved reading this:

"Sometimes I feel distinctly OVEREDUCATED. I tell students that they should become masters of their chosen medium, and that is true if you’re to be able to survive as a working illustrator. However, [...] my sincerest wish is to draw like a highly evolved 8-year-old. Drawing from a purer, more instinctual place, not one of virtuosic control."

after reading this i felt encouraged to loosen up and just play with shape and form by obnoxiously drawing monsters all over the studio walls. that's all my inner child cares about really.. monsters.

these are some of many pictures i've been taking with a digital camera that i stole from my parent's place. my blog has been really boring lately, i'm sorry. i've just been really busy exploring new york. the good news is that i'll be starting my residency in 4 days so i'll be drawing so much and will have so much to show. i've been biking all over manhattan and brooklyn everyday looking for inspiration - there certainly isn't a lack of any. i spent the day in long island today and checked out the ps1 contemporary art center. the entire museum is made up of three gigantic floors with several gallery spaces on each floor. it's all within an old heritage building - it was gorgeous. They even kept all of the deteriorated walls covered in graffiti in the staircases. my favorite museum to date.
